News: Two Delaware Township firefighters hurt in crash at Altoona intersection

POLK COUNTY, IA -- Two Delaware Township firefighters were hospitalized Wednesday evening after their marked SUV was hit by a pickup truck in a west Altoona intersection, reports WHO Des Moines.

The accident occurred at the corner of 8th Street and 34th Avenue Southwest at around 4:30 p.m.

Altoona Police Department said the fire crew had been en route to a crash scene in the 6900 block of Northeast 56th Street. As the SUV crossed northbound at the intersection with its emergency equipment turned on, it was broadsided by a Ram 1500 pickup truck going westbound on 8th Street.

Two firefighters in the SUV suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

It was unclear whether or not the causing driver was hurt, but authorities said they were issued a citation for their role in the crash.
