Interstate 80 in Iowa

Interstate 80 connects San Francisco, CA to Teaneck, NJ and cuts through the center of Iowa. I-80 and I-35 join together, passing through West Des Moines, bypassing Des Moines and splitting up again in Ankeny. I-80 boasts the world’s biggest truck stop, in addition to shopping malls, commercial centers and casinos, and access to farms, tourist sites and colleges off various exits. The highway is a major artery for trucks transporting goods into and out of Iowa and traveling through while carrying goods cross-country.

I-80 is also often the location of serious tractor-trailer accidents, including a 30-auto pileup during a snowstorm in early 2014. Our personal injury attorneys regularly handle claims involving big-rig accidents on I-80.

Interstate 35 in Iowa

Interstate 35 connects Laredo, TX at the United States-Mexico border to Duluth, MN, close to the United States-Canada border. Although running north to south and intersecting the West to East Coast highway I-80, the two major highways overlap near Des Moines. I-35 also intersects the historic Lincoln Highway, now U.S. Route 30. The road services the Des Moines-area suburbs, including West Des Moines and Ankeny, and provides multiple scenic overlooks throughout Iowa. Tractor-tailors haul goods along I-35 to and from the borders and surrounding states.

Serious auto crashes occur regularly on this busy highway. In fact, several deaths and catastrophic injuries resulted from overturned semis, head-on collisions and multiple car pileups over the past decade. Our personal injury lawyers have handled multiple cases involving truck wrecks on I-35.

Other major routes in Iowa

Iowa’s highway system includes state- and federally maintained freeways and county- and city-controlled roads. Spur routes, including farm-to-market roads and scenic byways, connect smaller towns and rural districts. Commercial truck drivers use these secondary roads in Iowa to carry agricultural supplies and products.

Interstate highways that pass through Iowa include I-29 and I-74. Iowa’s mainline routes include US 6, US 18, US 20, US 34 and US 218. The state system includes Iowa 2, Iowa 3, Iowa 9, Iowa 27 and Iowa 92. U.S. Route 30 connects Astoria, OR to Atlantic City, NJ and is the longest major highway in Iowa. US 30 absorbed much of the famous Lincoln Highway.
