News: Deadly fire breaks out on 19th Street NE in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - One person lost their life in a fire at an apartment complex located at 210 19th Street NE on Tuesday, according to KCRG.

The fire broke out around 2:13 p.m. Many residents could not evacuate their apartments on the second and third floors due to the large amount of smoke. Emergency crews rescued these residents through exterior windows.

Paramedics transported four people to an area hospital for fire and smoke inhalation injuries. One of the four people died at the hospital.

Crews rescued two cats. Two other cats died.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental but do not know where or how it started.
